Stabs 3
Just been re-reading a few old mags and in one I came across a letter from Sammy V about allrounders. In it he said that he'd had a decent Labrador/Greyhound and also an Irish/Setter/Greyhound which were both good allrounders. When he got onto his favourite, it was an ESS/Greyhound and he went on to say this cross (with the proper training) takes some beating as an allrounder. Just thought I'd ask if anyone had any experiences of any of these crosses? Quote Link to post
JOHNBOY 18
know a boy that had a first cross was really biddable and easily trained was used for lampin rabbits and done well but not tried on anything else, it wasnt much of a looker and realy heavy made, in my opinion the cross would have to go back to the greyhound a couple of times to make a capable all rounder. DUCKWING 302
WELL STABS , OVER THE YEARS IVE SEEN QUITE A FEW UNUSUAL CROSSES , WHEN I WAS A KID , A LAD JUST ROUND THE CORNER FROM ME HAD A LABRADOR X WHIPPET WHICH WAS FANTASTIC AT CATCHING RABBITS AND FEATHERED GAME IN COVER , A THICK SET SORT WITH AN ALMOST BULL X TYPE BUILD , LATER ON IN LIFE I WENT HUNTING QUITE REGULAR WITH A COUPLE OF LADS WHO USED MY UNCLES WORKING LAB OVER A WHIPPET GREYHOUND AND A GREYHOUND BITCH KEEPING BACK 2 PUPS FROM EACH LITTER......... ALL THESE PUPS TURNED INTO GOOD SOUND DOGS ............ FUNNILY ENOUGH ALL TOOK FOX WELL , BUT EXCELLED IN DAYTIME WORK HAVING WELL ABOVE AVERAGE NOSES AND ENOUGH SPEED TO FILL A FREEZER MANY TIMES OVER ..............................A CROSS IVE PONDERED OVER BREEDING FROM THE RIGHT SORT OF LAB MYSELF MANY TIMES . A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE , SWEARS BY THE SPRINGER X ................ NOT AS AN ALL ROUNDER BUT AS AN OUT AND OUT RABBIT DOG FOR DAYTIME WORK , FERRETING ETC , I HAVENT SEEN HIS RECENT STOCK WORK BUT A FEW YEARS AGO SPENT QUITE A FEW WEEKENDS WITH HIM ............. TO SAY I WAS IMPRESSED WOULD BE AN....... UNDERSTATMENT.!! ........ THE DRIVE , NOSE , STAMINA AND ABILITY THIS CROSS HAS IS FANTASTIC ..... THE DOWN SIDE WAS THAT THE CROSS CAN BE A LITTLE SLOW , AND HES FOUND BY ADDING EXTRA RUNNING DOG BLOOD THAT THE THINGS HE LOVES THE CROSS FOR ARE LOST ............ THE LAST TIME WE SPOKE HE WAS TRYING 5/8s AND PONDERING TRYING 2 HALF CROSSES TOGETHER . IVE SEEN A FEW NICE GERMAN SHEPARD CROSSES ........... AND SOME NOT ! A STANDARD POODLE CROSS GREYHOUND THAT WAS THE ..... BEST .... RETREIVER I THINK IVE SEEN . DOBERMAN X GREYHOUNDS ...... NOT REALLY UP TO MUCH THE COUPLE IVE SEEN ...THOUGH ONE COULD KILL HARES WELL ENOUGH . SOME BORZOI CROSSES , ONE OF WHICH WASNT A BAD BITCH AND COULD KILL HER SHARE AND ...................... SOME VERY GOOD SMALL DOGS FOR RABBITS MAINLY , ONE BRED FROM A RUSSEL OVER A WHIPPET , WHICH HAD A FANTASTIC NOSE AND TALLIED UP AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF GAME IN ITS LIFE , AND ANOTHER BRED FROM A BORDER DOG OVER A SNACK [ WHIPPET / GREYHOUND ] WHICH WAS ONE OF THE BEST SMALL LAMPING DOGS IVE EVER SEEN , LAST BUT NOT LEAST ..................... ONE OF MY FAVOURITES THE WIRE HAIRED POINTER X ........ I REALLY LIKE THIS CROSS , THEY HAVE DRIVE , NOSE ,BRAINS AND STAMINA APLENTY ....... ITS JUST GETTING THE RIGHT MIX THERES SOME LADS UP HERE THAT HAVE TAKEN HUGE .... AND I MEAN HUGE AMOUNTS OF GAME WITH THIS CROSS .......... YOU NEVER KNOW ....... IF I FANCY ANOTHER PUP THIS MIGHT BE THE ONE I TRY ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
Jesus.....this is an old thred... Lab/greyhounds, IMO could be the very ticket for some, built out of 'racy', quality field stock they would be no heavier than some crosses knockin about. A lad I know had one, regular readers of EDRD would have seen some articles by him and his suedonim (spelling?) is based on this dog 'Greylab'. This dog had a good reputation around this town, hard as nails and of course a crackin nose, the dog was an excelent marker for terrier work and fast enough for the night game. I know stalking lads who's Lab's can hit an pull down deer, these dogs, would be the type i'd look for 'IF' I was lookin down them lines. Borzoi/greyhound is another dog I've seen in the field, ugly fecker with that long 'drop nose', this dog could kill a hare or two! Seen a Dalmation/greyhound also, again a game fecker, the lad who had him used him just for fox, I think he could of made a crackin allrounder. The thing is....... I like a weirdo......All these crosses, on paper, could be quite handy BUT it'd be far far to bigger gamble for me. There are far more tried an trusted crosses out there. Quote Link to post
